How to charge a non-Tesla at a Tesla Supercharger, step by step

You need three things: the Tesla app, a site that is open to non-Tesla EVs, and either a native NACS port or an approved adapter. The whole first-time setup takes about five minutes. Here is the exact sequence.

Before you leave home

  1. Install the Tesla app (iOS or Android) and create an account. You do not need to own a Tesla.
  2. Tap Charge Your Non-Tesla on the app's home screen and add a payment card. Charging is billed to it automatically.
  3. Add your vehicle when asked. The app uses it to show compatible sites and to warn you about adapters.
  4. Get the right adapter if your car has a CCS1 port. Use the one your car maker approves; see the adapter comparison. Native NACS cars skip this step.
  5. Check the site on ChargeMap. Pick your car and confirm the site you plan to use is green or amber, not grey.

At the Supercharger

  1. Choose a stall the cable can reach. V3 cables are short and sized for Tesla's rear-left port. If your port is on the right or the front, back in so the port is nearest the post, or use an end stall. Do not block two stalls if you can avoid it. Details by car here.
  2. Note the stall number printed on the post (for example 3B).
  3. Attach your adapter to the Supercharger cable first, then plug the adapter into your car. At a Magic Dock stall, select the stall in the app and tap Unlock Adapter; the built-in CCS1 adapter releases with the cable.
  4. In the app, select the site and stall number and tap Start Charging. The post handshakes with your car and charging begins within about 30 seconds. The app shows kW, percentage and cost live.
  5. To finish, tap Stop Charging in the app, then unplug. Detach your adapter from the cable and take it with you. Return a Magic Dock adapter to its dock.
  6. Move your car when done. Busy sites charge idle fees per minute once charging ends.

If it does not start

  • Wrong stall number. The most common miss. Stop the session in the app and pick the number on the post you are actually plugged into.
  • Adapter not seated. Unplug, reseat the adapter on the cable, then into the car. Some cars need the charge port door fully open.
  • Site is Tesla-only. V2 sites will not authenticate other brands. Check the map; grey means move on.
  • Brand not enabled yet. If your brand is announced but not live, only Magic Dock stalls work. See the access news.
  • Charging but slow. Normal for 800 V cars at V3 stalls. Here is why.

Cost

Pricing is per kWh and shown in the app before you start. Non-Tesla drivers pay a higher rate unless they buy the monthly Supercharging membership. The pricing guide has the break-even math.
